Smart motorways

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) Managed Motorways initiative refers to the integrated use of state-of-the-art smart technology to allow the proactive, real-time management of the south east Queensland road network.



Managed Motorways technologies, collectively referred to as Intelligent Transport Systems, help to reduce stop-start travel, improve safety and provide more predictable travel times for motorists. These technologies include:

• Variable speed limit signs

• Flexible lane control

• Ramp signalling

• Travel time signs

• Electronic message signs

• Roadside data systems

It is important that Queensland motorists understand how to respond to real-time changing motorway signs and instructions as these signs are enforceable and each driver's compliance benefits all motorway users.
