Variable speed limit signs

Variable speed limit signs (VSLS) allow the speed limit on a motorway to be reduced when road conditions change during bad weather or as a result of an accident or congestion. Reducing the speed limit using VSLS helps keep traffic flowing and minimises stop-start driving.

Driver tip: A flashing red circle on the VSLS indicates the speed limit has changed and drivers should smoothly adjust to the new speed limit.
